The folks from KEEN shoes (some the best shoes I’ve ever worn) recently offered a series of contest grants in three sustainability-oriented categories, including Activism. Trathen Heckman, NGO Director for Daily Acts used us to give a 3 minute synopsis of their upcoming Household Hedonism program, aimed at teaching people how to convert their lawn space into foodscapes. Check out the video by clicking on the link below. We shot this inside of 2 hours and edited it in just a couple more to help Daily Acts meet the KEEN contest deadlines.

If you’re looking for something fun to do on Saturday, October 13. . .say between the hours of 9 and 3, stop by the Community Center at Lucchessi Park for the Petaluma Going Green Expo. Find out more about it by clicking here.
Come one, come all…feast your eyes on demonstrations, fantastic lectures and exhibits featuring eco-conscious organizations and business from all over the community. Best of all - it’s free! Yours truly will be there promoting Eco-Centric media in the form of digital video production and graphic design. All of us are coming together with a common purpose - to educate the public about how they can live in greater balance within their home and in the world.

There have been some cool features on the Petaluma River, running through the center of my hometown; a place I love to get out and paddle on very much. WBP didn’t shoot or produce any of this. Just helping to spread the news about our river and tidal marshland as many ways as possible. Click on each of the links to watch each of these features:

A great investigative piece that aired on KPIX, our local CBS station out of San Fran. This clip talks about the proposed expansion of the Redwood Landfill, which already sits dangerously close to the marshland and its tributaries. Waste Management has a trench and levee system surrounding the landfill to capture any runoff of toxic liquids, etc., but it’s not failsafe. Click on the link for No Wetlands Landfill Expansion to the right for more information. Note: the link above will take you to the main CBS video library. If you type in “Landfill Expansion” into the library search box, it’ll bring the segment up.

August 5 marked the first “Mayor’s Boat Ride”, the largest floatilla that Friends of the Petaluma River has ever organized. Over 80 non-motorized watercraft with close to 150 people paddled from our marina to historic Downtown Petaluma and back. This is a followup to a “Mayor’s Bike Ride” that took place earlier this year, part of our Mayor Pam Torliatt’s efforts to bring awareness to alternative transportation and recreation opportunities in our community. You can watch the video by clicking here.

Our river was featured on KPIX Ch 5’s “Eye on the Bay” on May 18th. It featured Friends of the Petaluma River as “boat hosts” for the day and also included good information on the Petaluma estuary provided by the Bay Institute’s Mark Holms. David Yearsley and Friends of the Petaluma River provided transportation and interview footage featuring David’s vast knowledge of our watershed.

A big huzzah to river-focused, ecocentric media! WBP is close to wrapping up a demo video for Friends of the Petaluma River with sights on many more Friends-supporting educational media projects waiting in the wings. Get more information about Friends by clicking on the link above or to the right.

OK, so I’ve had my iPhone for a little less than 2 weeks now. I was fortunate enough to ummmm. . .make a wise investment and acquire a place toward the front of the line at our local AT&T store. I wasn’t sure about the hype around the phone up until the last week or so before its release. Excited, as always, for a new creative birthing from Mr. Jobs’ head of course. I’ll be a lifelong Mac devotee, so the phone was on my radar.

Wow. Really glad I made the investment. Just a beautiful device. I love how they’ve integrated all of the necessary life management tools into one beautiful package. If you’re on the fence about taking the plunge and picking up an iPhone, it has my enthusiastic endorsement. There are a few small things I’d love to see Apple address with software updates, but these are minor:

iPod function only allows a full import of your library or syncing playlists. I’d like to be able to drag songs from my main iTunes library into the iPhone without having to set up a playlist.

Task list function, integrated either into the notepad or calendar

In the Safari function, I’d love to be able to set a homepage and have them add a home button.

The YouTube feature seems to be limited in the amount of videos available. Searching for a video outside the featured or newest often turns up an empty search, even if I know that the videos are up there in the YouTube universe. Apple should fix that.

The phone should be able to have custom ringtones. My guess is that a future generation of the iTunes store will introduce DRM ringtones.

But those are quibbling little things. Overall, the iPhone rocks. I’m as excited about this latest offering from Apple as I was when Final Cut Studio was released. Go iPhone!

Today our nation was greeted with tragedy with the death of 33 people on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. Sons and daughters laid to waste, reminding us how profoundly one person’s senseless aggression can impact us as one nation, one community. It should be a reminder to us that violence only begets suffering and sorrow. Today’s events should not blind us to the reality that violence is waged by the human community every day—on each other, on non-humans, on ecosystems. We can be filthy beings when we choose to be.

I stand atop a mountain of silence in remembrance of the fallen in Blacksburg and pray for the healing of their families and loved ones.

Peace,

The Sacramento Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association (TSCA) was in town on March 31, organizing their annual paddle on the Petaluma River. Nearly two dozen rowboats and sailboats let their colors fly on a paddle from the Marina in Petaluma up to the Turning Basin. After taking a break at Dempsey’s for some liquid refreshments, the river caravan headed back downstream, finishing up at Lakeville Marina and lunch at Papa’s Taverna on Lakeville Highway. We were blessed with bright, beautiful sunshine and mild weather throughout the day. Many thanks to Don Rich from the Sacramento TSCA for organizing the event, an unofficial kickoff to fun on the river in 2007.

WBP spent the morning and afternoon collecting footage of the small crafts at the Turning Basin in Petaluma and then back downriver, catching them at Shollenberger Park and at the Lakeville Marina. Despite the direct overhead sunlight, my Canon GL-2 got some great footage. Any day filming nature—and especially our precious river ecosystem—is a good one in my book. We look to incorporate some of the footage into Friends of the Petaluma River’s marketing and educational video projects. Look for them beginning in May!

Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra

Sunday, March 25, 2007, Spreckels Performing Arts Center — 5409 Snyder Lane, Rohnert Park

7pm

The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra has continued successfully for decades and is still in great demand. With hits like Amapola, Green Eyes, Tangerine, I Remember You and So Rare the band jumped to the top of the charts making the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra one of the biggest swing bands of the 1930s and 1940s. Now under the direction of trombonist Bill Tole, who played Tommy Dorsey in the movie New York, New York, the band features Nancy Knorr, formerly the lead singer of the Pied Pipers. The combined energy of the big band with Bill’s smooth trombone and Nancy’s elegant vocal style will surely transport you back to another era.

Our PHS Jazz Band will be opening the show, after a succesful shot opening for Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers in January at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma. Our Jazz band is great! Tickets are $32. Come on out, enjoy a great evening of music and fun, and help support music education at Petaluma High School!
